Time-lapse cameras are used throughout our aeroponic farm to capture the growth of all the crops. We mainly film at night, when there are no moving shadows, passing clouds, or changing sunlight that can create flickering in the final footage. For fast-growing crops, we sometimes capture images less than an hour apart, while slower crops are recorded over much longer intervals. Each camera operates independently and is powered by its own small solar panel, allowing us to leave them filming continuously around the farm. Over time, these time-lapses have become more than just incredible footage. They allow us to observe and compare how different crops develop, how quickly they fill the towers, and which varieties perform particularly well. One thing we consistently observe is speed. Crops grown on our aeroponic towers can grow around 30% faster than their soil-grown counterparts, while also producing larger plants and higher yields. Sometimes you don’t realize how much a plant has grown until you compress weeks of growth into just a few seconds.

We grow hundreds of different crops vertically, all using the same ionic mineral nutrient solution at the same dosage. Each tower operates independently with its own reservoir, and the plants are irrigated intermittently, with the pump running for 3 minutes followed by 12 minutes off. The nutrient solution provides the plants with all the essential minerals and trace elements they need to grow and thrive. All of the towers are connected to a gravity-fed tank containing nutrient water, which automatically tops them off as water is used by the plants. This method of soilless farming allows us to save on space and water usage compared to traditional methods.

The versatility of aeroponic towers is unmatched by any other soilless growing system. The same system can be used outdoors, indoors, or inside a greenhouse, while growing hundreds of different crops with one nutrient formula/dosage, one baseline pH, and the same simple irrigation cycle. This is very different from many traditional hydroponic systems, where nutrient concentrations and pH often need to be adjusted depending on the crop being grown. In aeroponic towers, the roots hang freely in the air for around 80% of the time, giving them excellent access to oxygen and allowing the plants to absorb water and nutrients more efficiently.

This vertical farming method uses significantly less space and water compared to traditional farming. All the plants are irrigated automatically using intermittent cycles of 3 minutes on and 12 minutes off, continuously throughout the day. The nutrients are dosed at a 1:300 ratio, providing the plants with all the essential minerals and trace elements they need for healthy growth. The nutrient enriched water is stored in a centralized gravity tank and automatically tops up the reservoirs at the base of the towers whenever needed, regulated by float valves.

So in essence, the growing system is almost completely automated. Your main jobs are to sow the seeds, take care of the seedlings, transplant them into the towers, and harvest. We also recommend cleaning the towers periodically between growing cycles to keep everything running properly.

Maximizing tomato cultivation on aeroponic towers by planting 36 tomato plants vertically on four aeroponic towers. Tomatoes can be incredibly productive in aeroponics, but they need the right spacing, support, pruning, and nutrition to keep the plants under control and producing at their best.

1. Planting Strategy: Because of the size of tomato plants and their massive root systems, we recommend planting no more than one tomato plant per growing level. This gives the vines enough room to develop without overcrowding each other.

2. Grow Cage: Tomatoes need strong support to guide the vines as they grow and to carry the weight of the fruit. We use a custom-built galvanized steel grow cage with metal cables that accommodates a total of four aeroponic towers. As the vines grow, we train them along the structure to keep everything organized and supported.

3. Tomato Varieties: For this trial, we grew only grape tomato varieties, including Five Star red grape tomatoes and Nova orange grape tomatoes. In our experience, grape tomatoes are actually more difficult to manage than many of the cherry tomato varieties we’ve grown. The vines tend to intertwine much more, so they require additional pruning and training to keep everything manageable. But the productivity is incredible!

4. Pruning: Pruning is absolutely essential. We prune the plants every week to control vegetative growth, improve airflow, and keep the vines manageable. Without regular pruning, these plants would quickly turn into a massive bushy mess, making harvesting more difficult and potentially reducing productivity.

5. Nutrients: These tomatoes are grown completely without soil. Instead, an ionic mineral nutrient solution is automatically dosed into the irrigation system, supplying the plants with the essential minerals and trace elements they need for healthy growth and fruit production.
